McCarthy Mentoring is delighted to have supported Eyes of Hope co-Founder Dr Shenouda Girgis in his first year running the new charity that brings free mobile eye care clinics and glasses to Sydney’s homeless and disadvantaged.
Winner of our 2024 Not for Profit Executive Scholarship, Shen received a Hogan Leadership Assessment to learn more about his strengths and development opportunities to work on in this new role outside of the usual hospital setting. He was then matched with entrepreneur, growth strategist and McCarthy Mentoring mentor, Kylie Little, to gain insights, guidance and support.
Shen says the mentoring sessions has opened up a new realm of knowledge and insight that has helped grow the charity in new and exciting ways.
Some of the areas of discussion has been on team expansion and structures, building an effective volunteer strategy and refining processes and procedures to ensure the long-term sustainability and growth of the charity.
Shen said the McCarthy Mentoring scholarship and working with Kylie has been invaluable. “Kylie and I reverse engineered the process by starting with the end goal in mind and then worked on the steps to get there. Every time we meet I come away with another hit of energy and strategy to apply.”
Kylie says “mentoring Shen has been an incredibly inspiring experience. Access to glasses and eye care can be truly life-changing for those who are homeless, and the mission of Shen and his team is both powerful and urgent. He’s achieved remarkable impact in such a short time, and it’s been a privilege to support him through the McCarthy Mentoring Scholarship.”
Since launch, Eyes of Hope has delivered vital eye care through its four mobile clinics at St Vincent de Paul, Oz Harvest and Kirkton Road Centre Sydney locations. It is estimated more than 10,000 homeless people in NSW suffer with reduced vision that increases their vulnerability and impacts access to employment and services.
