We were pleased to help launch the NSW Bar Association’s 2016 Mentoring Program at a special event held this week. Now in its third year, the program will support more than 30 junior members of the Bar by connecting them with an experienced senior barrister.
At the launch Noel Hutley SC, President of the NSW Bar Association, acknowledged that it can be a rewarding and collegiate profession but as barristers are self-employed it can be competitive and lonely at times. He highlighted the value of mentoring in supporting junior barristers to achieve success at the Bar. As we see across all professions and sectors, junior barristers find immense value in having a confidential, independent advisor who they can have honest, open discussions about developing their business and life in this profession. The mentoring program is also rewarding for the mentors who often gain as much value and learning as the mentees.
Of course, as with all things in life, the more you put into it the more likely you will get a lot out of it. If you are committed to the mentoring process, open to feedback and willing to take responsibility for your own development, mentoring can be very powerful.
