Case Study
Council of Australasian Museum Directors
The Council of Australasian Museum Directors (CAMD) Mentoring Program sought to improve gender diversity at executive levels and further support the career progression of talented aspiring female leaders. With 76 women over four years taking part, the program offered nominated women a unique opportunity to participate in workshops, events and work one to one with an experienced executive mentor to build their personal and leadership capability. Volunteer mentors were Directors of CAMD member museums and the McCarthy Mentoring network of leaders in the cultural sector. Amongst the graduated alumni, many have been promoted, new roles or increased responsibilities. The majority say they are more confident, engaged and have strengthened important networks in the industry.
Stockland Senior Women’s Sponsorship Program
Seven talented, high-potential senior women were selected to participate in a Stockland Women’s Sponsorship Program run by McCarthy Mentoring for 18 months. They were each carefully matched with a member of the Executive Committee to support their career and professional development.
Impact: 72% promoted or increased responsibilities; 100% reported increased engagement, performance and improved stakeholder management. Other outcomes: increased confidence, leadership skills, commercial acumen and strategic mindset.
The Executive sponsors valued the opportunity, gaining a lot from working closely with talented women from another part of the business, understanding challenges faced and refining their own leadership skills.
Katharina Surikow, Senior Policy Advisor, Property Council of Australia
Katharina says her time with her mentor, Anne Skipper AM, developed into something more broader than she expected and she learnt so much. It changed her attitudes on a number of levels and gave her support that she didn’t even know she needed until it was there.
Since her mentoring experience, Katharina was promoted to Policy Manager, Property Council of Australia before starting at Global Infrastructure Hub where she is now Senior Manager, Corporate and External Affairs.
