So far in the program you have set some goals and spent time considering your strengths and blind spots. This month you will start to think about your career more broadly and in particular your next role and the experience and skills you want to build to achieve it. Start thinking about some of these questions:
- What do you want from your career? Fun, security, status, a challenge?
- Are you looking for an intellectual challenge, opportunity to be creative, mastering a profession, global opportunities, financial security, flexibility or autonomy?
- Can you identify your next role? What is your plan to get there?
- Where do you see yourself in 3 years?
- Do you want to be part of a large organisation or a start-up? Or even perhaps starting your own business?
- How much do you need to earn?
Thinking about these questions is all part of the process in helping you achieve the career and life you want.
Your activity this month is to start mapping your career, so you are prepared when opportunities arise. It is a work in progress so add notes, ideas and strategies as they come to you. Test them with your mentor. Be honest about what you need to earn and what you really enjoy and start planning the path to your next role, perhaps it doesn’t even exist yet.
